$59 for a One-Night Stay and Breakfast for Two at Vintage Villas Hotel in Texas ($139 Value)

Secluded Villas with Scenic Views of Sunsets on Lake Travis With miles of undulating green terrain and glittering water features, one could almost mistake the Texas Hill Country landscape for a tiny village in Tuscany. Such topography is uncommon in typically flat Texas, and Vintage Villas takes advantage of its location amid the hills: its main buildings and balconies sit perched above a bluff looking out toward the vast Lake Travis. Just a 30-minute drive away resides funky downtown Austin—itself somewhat of an oddity in the state—and the staff members of this boutique hotel can offer their own insiders’ take on the best hot spots in the town. The 44 rooms are spread out over three distinct villas, and each has its own theme and distinct style that aims to reflect the character of a region in the state: South Texas rooms are rustic and cowboyish; Central Texas recalls a feel of country comfort; and East Texas evokes Victorian style with its steam-powered butlers. Vibrant colors cover the walls and many of the end tables and plush couches, giving the rooms the feel of a bucolic French country home. Original artwork, antique furniture, old cowboy artifacts, and wide-cut baseboards lend the charming hotel an inviting, homey ambiance. A hearty breakfast is served in the sunny South Texas Dining Room each morning, where a full spread of sliced fruit, eggs, bacon, and breakfast breads provide fuel for adventures on Lake Travis. Austin, Texas: Music-Driven Metropolis with Small-Town Feel Vintage Villas is tucked away about 30 minutes from bustling downtown Austin, which helps hone the focus on the natural beauty and simpler pleasures around Lake Travis. Vacationers can enjoy swimming and boating, or fish for largemouth bass, catfish, and discarded screenplays. The rolling terrain of the Texas Hill Country becomes a playground for mountain bikers. For walkers and hikers, Zilker Metropolitan Park unfurls with miles of wooded trails, crushed gravel trails, and footbridges. And though it’s removed from the quiet solitude of the Vintage Villas, it’s worth the trip to check out the eclectic downtown area of Austin. The city has grown into one of the South’s top destination for live music—in addition to a wealth of boot-scootin’ country bars, there’s also indie rock, jazz-funk, and Latin sambas. $300 For A Full Day Fishing Tour for Three Through Bay Adventures Sportfishing

Humans and aquatic creatures rarely occupy the same space, mostly due to differences in breathing mechanisms and over what really happened at that Mesozoic family party. Venture out onto open waters to see how the other half of the animal kingdom lives with today’s Groupon: for $300, you get eight hours of fishing with two friends, led by an experienced captain from Bay Adventures Sportfishing (a $450 value). Bay Adventures Sportfishing’s tour of Galveston Bay Complex helps diligent reelers and their friends pull in heaps of gleaming saltwater fish. The scenic eight-hour vacation among the bay’s fishy hotspots presents chances to catch various early-to-bed, early-to-rise breeds as well as more crepuscular water dwellers that thrill even the most jaded veterans of Herman Melville book clubs. Captain Steve Auld and the fellow leaders of his fishing boat flotilla boast numerous awards and expertise that helps them guide passengers to the softer, more comfortable water that fish congregate in, as well as angling tips and casting advice. For seafarers who don’t bring their own gear, Bay Adventures provides rods, reels, and artificial lures to help you break the ice with aquatic acquaintances. Like the security door at the international space station, this trip demands you present a valid Texas fishing license, and recommends bringing snacks and a cooler to carry home cleaned and packaged fish.
